UK Starmer Holds Ground After Election Drubbing
(MENAFN) British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Monday accepted personal responsibility for steering the country through a bruising electoral setback last week, defending his decision to hold course rather than step aside amid mounting pressure.
"The election results last week were tough, very tough. We lost some brilliant labor representatives; that hurts, and it should hurt. I get it, I feel it, and I take responsibility," Starmer said during an event in London.
Rather than deflect criticism — including dissent from within his own ranks — the Labour leader acknowledged the skepticism head-on, pledging to silence his detractors through action.
He noted that he is not going to shy away from the fact that he has got "some doubters, including in my own party," adding that he has to prove them wrong, and he will.
Starmer framed his continued leadership not as self-preservation, but as a deliberate act of national stewardship in an increasingly volatile global environment.
"I take responsibility for navigating us through a world that is more dangerous than at any time in my life, and I take responsibility for not walking away, not plunging our country into chaos."
The Prime Minister also used the platform to signal a major foreign policy realignment, vowing to reset Britain's strained ties with the continent by "putting Britain at the heart of Europe." He argued bluntly that Brexit had left the country both "poorer" and "weaker," while immigration levels "went through the roof" in its aftermath.
Reform Surges as Labour and SNP Headlines Dominate Vote Count
The electoral landscape that prompted Starmer's remarks was a complex one. The Labour Party suffered a historic defeat in the Welsh Senedd, while the Scottish National Party defied expectations by retaining power for an unprecedented fifth consecutive term in the Scottish Parliament.
The votes spanned Scotland, Wales, and 136 English local authorities — the most extensive set of polls since the 2024 general election.
The night's most striking trajectory, however, belonged to Reform UK, which captured more than 1,450 council seats, extending a wave of momentum that began with the party's breakthrough in town halls the previous year.
